Everyone knows and loves Brighton Pavilion, with its iconic domes, but did you know Brighton and Hove is home to over 3,360 listed historical buildings, 476 of which are grade I & II*?
Whether you’re excited to visit the best of Brighton and Hove’s historical sites, or you’re considering moving into a graded home of your own, our local experts have plenty of tips.
Preston Manor is one of Brighton’s hidden treasures, surprising even seasoned residents with its charming Edwardian decor. Visitors can take a tour through eight richly furnished rooms, or enjoy theatrical events such as murder mystery evenings and performances for children in the gardens.
On a clear day, the views from the Foredown Water Tower are unmissable. This beautifully converted Edwardian water tower features a viewing room with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and across the Channel. It also houses the largest operational camera obscura in the South East, projecting images of the surrounding landscape via a unique system of mirrors.
Lancing College was founded back in 1848 as an independent boarding school. The college’s gothic revival chapel is the largest school chapel in the world, boasting the largest rose window in England as well as beautiful carvings and tapestries, soaring columns and three remarkable organs.
Chattri means umbrella in Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu, and the umbrella-like white dome of the Chattri Monument can be seen across the Downs. Dedicated to the Indian soldiers who died in the First World War, it was unveiled in 1921 by the Prince of Wales.
With a colourful history stretching over 200 years, the Royal Pavilion was first built as a pleasure palace for King George IV - and a discreet location for liaisons with his long-time companion, Maria Fitzherbert.
The pavilion was used as a hospital during World War I, and it’s been reported that during World War II, Adolf Hitler intended to make the Royal Pavilion his headquarters. This architectural gem has been at the centre of much of Brighton’s history, and continues its legacy as a much-loved attraction.
