New research by Lloyds Bank shows that one in four home owners in the UK want to move within the next five years, but the perceived cost of doing so is making it hard to move up the ladder. The survey revealed that 22% of people think the cost of actually moving is a key blocker for buying their next home.
The abolition of Stamp Duty announced in the Autumn 2017 budget will make a huge difference in moving costs for first time buyers, but as well as that, Maslen Estate Agents have compiled a list of tips to further reduce your moving costs.
- Declutter
It might sound obvious, but it’s time to be ruthless. Haven’t used a lamp in six months? Get rid of it. Got a cabinet full of junk? Empty it and then evaluate if you really need that cabinet at all. The less you have to move, the easier and cheaper it will be.
- Use the right estate agent
Surprise fees, unexpected moving costs, last minute charges - sounds like a nightmare. If you’re working with an estate agent you can trust, you’ll be able to get honest information about the any potential fees that might come up. Despite not being an essential qualification, 78% of Maslen Estate Agent staff have sat exams and are qualified with the Level 3 Technical Award in the Sale of Residential Property - so you can trust we’ll advise you properly.
- Choose when you move
Everyone wants to move in the summer or at the weekend, for obvious reasons. If possible, try moving midweek or off-season as it may considerably reduce your moving costs. Removal companies will be less busy, and might even offer discounts as it’s a quiet time for them.
- Find the right removal company
Googling and calling the first removal company you find could end up being quite costly. Instead, do some research - ask your estate agent, as they’ll know the area and the best companies to go for. Ask friends and family for recommendations too. It could end up saving you a lot of money.
- Review your suppliers
Utility bills, internet companies, TV licence - if you don’t sort these out in advance, it could end up costing you. Make sure you let companies know when you are leaving, and give them a meter reading if necessary. Check with your estate agent that your current internet provider services your new home, to ensure you won’t end up paying for slow internet once you’ve moved.
- Think ahead
When you’re packing up your current home, keep the dimensions of your new place in your mind. Will all of your furniture and appliances fit? If you think there are things you won’t be able to put anywhere in your new home, sell it before you move rather than move it and then have to get rid of it.
